Why Panchakarma for healthy ageing?
Ageing is a multi-dimensional domain that comprises physical, psychological, and social changes. The aged people who are older than 65 years will constitute 20% of the total population at the global level by 2050. Presently, about 3.8% population of India is older than 65 years, and the number will increase to 200 million by 2015. Older people generally suffer from diseases like Respiratory problems, Heart diseases, Cancer, Stroke, Arthritis, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Depression, Psychiatric disorders, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Here Rasayana and Panchakarma of Ayurveda can play a vital role in Healthy Aging.
What is Rasayana therapy?
- Rasayana therapy is a health care system of Ayurveda, which can potentially prevent diseases and manage metabolic disorders at the older stage.
- It can minimise ageing impacts and improve intelligence, memory, complexion, etc.
- It is pretty effective for immuno-enhancement, free-radical scavenging, and anti-stress.
Panchakarma-A miracle for health
- Panchakarma is a bio-cleansing process comprising five main modules Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis), Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation), Astapana Vasti (Therapeutic Decoction Enema), Anuvasana Vasti (Therapeutic oil Enema), Nasya Karma (Nasal administration of medicaments).
- It is a vital therapy for body-humour homeostasis and helps prevent diseases.
- The procedure is effective for autoimmune, neurological, psychiatric, and musculoskeletal-related diseases.
Panchakarma schedule
Classically Panchakarma therapy is prescribed and practised through the following three schedules.
Purva karma (preparatory procedures)
Before administering Panchakarma therapy, the patient is prepared suitably with snehana and svedana as preparatory measures. Panchakarma therapy should not be undertaken without Purva kanna as it otherwise fails to eliminate the do a located in the tissues. The administration of oil/fat in snehana renders the body soft and liquefies do so that they become amenable to disintegration and detachment from the tissues. Svedana therapy dislodges the vitiated do a stagnated in the subtle channels of circulation, thus facilitating the pradhan karma to easily eliminate the do a through respective pathways. Sometimes snehana and svedana are also used as independent therapies.
Pradhana karma (main procedures)
After preparing the patient with snehana and svedana, the patient is subjected to the primary measures of Panchakarma- Vamana, virecana, nasya, basti and raktamoksana as per requirement.
Pascat Kanna (post-procedure measures)
To bring back the agni and stamina to a normal state after undergoing rigorous procedures, some specific diet patterns and lifestyles known as samsarjana karma are adopted. In this process, an initially easily digestible liquid-dominant diet is given with a gradual introduction of a routine diet.
